Canada 2009 (Winnipeg to Toronto)

Winnipeg

Do Winnipegu som dorazil s dvojhodinovym meskanim vlaku, co nakoniec ani nebolo az take zle ako sa zdalo pocas jazdy neustale prerusovanej kvoli cakaniu na nakladne vlaky, ktore maju na trati prednost pred osobnymi. V samotnom Winnipegu som zazil doteraz asi najextremnejsi rozdiel teploty v priebehu pol dna.

WINNIPEG (MANITOBA)

Stara Saint Boniface Cathedral (postavena v roku 1818) vyhorela asi pred 40 rokmi, zachovala sa iba fasada a obvodove mury, v zhorenom vnutre vyrastla nova mensia a modernejsia katedrala.

Saint Boniface Cathedral is an important architectural feature of Saint Boniface, Manitoba, Canada, especially in the eyes of the Franco-Manitoban community. A priest who later became a bishop, Norbert Provencher, ordered its construction in 1818 in the form of a small log chapel. Thus the first page in the history of Saint Boniface and Saint Boniface Cathedral was written.

For the second time in the history of the parish, on July 22, 1968, the residents of Saint Boniface would lose their beloved cathedral to a raging fire. In 1972, a new cathedral, designed by Étienne Gaboury and Denis Lussier, would be built behind the 1906 façade. It is the principal church in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Boniface.

Pohlad na Winnipeg a Esplanade Riel most.

The Esplanade Riel is a pedestrian bridge located in Winnipeg, Manitoba designed by Colin Douglas Stewart of Wardrop Engineering and Étienne Gaboury, Architect and completed in 2003. It spans the Red River connecting downtown Winnipeg with St. Boniface. The bridge is only one of a few in the world in that it has a restaurant (Salisbury House) on it, giving patrons an excellent view of the river and in its rarely seen structure. The Esplanade Riel has become a landmark and is used in many promotional materials. The bridge itself is a side-spar cable-stayed bridge. The original drawing, stamped by Étienne Gaboury, rests in the Engineering building of the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg.

Nahodne som natrafil na zeleznicne muzeum, ktore okupuje 2 nastupistia zeleznicnej stanice vo Winnipegu. Ta uz v dnesnej dobe nie je velmi vyuzivana, vlak to stoji len 3x v tyzdni (v kazdom smere).

Zrovnopravnenie zien s muzmi zacalo na zeleznici. Od hrncov a prania smerom k poriadnej praci!

Vladna budova The Manitoba Legislative Building vo Winnipegu z roku 1920.

Plan, prejst cez Kanadu iba vlakom stroskotal este pred priletom do Vancouveru. Nemohol som si proste dovolit premrhat 2 dni vo vlaku z Winnipegu do Toronta a tak som stravil na palube lietadla Air Canada prijemne dve hodinky. A hlavne v Toronte ma uz cakala navsteva z New Yorku s ladovo vychladenou slovenskou Double Cross vodkou.

TORONTO (ONTARIO)

Toronto

Toronto's Chinatown is an ethnic enclave in Downtown Toronto with a high concentration of ethnic Chinese residents and businesses, extending along Dundas Street West and Spadina Avenue. First developed in the late 19th century, it is now one of the largest Chinatowns in North America and one of several major Chinese-Canadian communities in the Greater Toronto Area.

University Avenue – siroky bulvar, najdolezitejsia a najprestiznejsia ulica v Toronte, centrum mesta s mnohymi vladnymi budovami a asi 7 nemocnicami a mnohymi uradmi.

University Avenue is a major north-south road in Downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. University Avenue is arguably Toronto's most prestigious thoroughfare. The boulevard is unusually wide for Canadian cities (except for Winnipeg), as it expands from 6 lanes wide (just past the jog at Front and York streets) to 8 lanes wide. The northernmost part of the street is dominated by a series of hospitals. The rest of the street is home to a variety of corporate offices and provincial government buildings. Historically, this imposing marble and concrete facade has met with mixed reviews. Noted Canadian author and historian Pierre Berton commented that University Avenue "was rendered antiseptic by the presence of hospitals and insurance offices... the pristine display of wall-to-wall concrete that ran from Front Street to Queen's Park."

Ontario College of Art & Design – jedna z najzaujimavejsich stavieb v Toronte.

The Ontario College of Art & Design is Canada's largest and oldest university for art and design. In 2004 work was completed on a new expansion. It consists of a box four storeys off the ground supported by a series of multi-coloured pillars at different angles and is often described as a tabletop.

The Distillery District is an historic and entertainment precinct located east of Downtown Toronto. It contains numerous cafes, restaurants and shops housed within heritage buildings of the former Gooderham and Worts Distillery. The 13-acre (52,000 sq. m) district comprises more than 40 heritage buildings and 10 streets, and is the largest collection of Victorian era industrial architecture in North America. Regardless of any criticism, the preservation and active re-use of the historic buildings has been widely praised. The Distillery District is a National historic site, and has been designated for protection under the Ontario Heritage Act since 1976. It was listed by National Geographic magazine as a "top pick" in Canada for travellers. The redevelopment of surrounding vacant lands is expected to accelerate the district's transformation from an abandoned industrial site into one of Toronto's most distinctive neighbourhoods.

Pevnost York postavena v roku 1793. Mala pomoct alebo neskor i nahradit britsku pevnost George v meste Niagara On The Lake, ktora bola velmi blizko novovzniknutych USA a preto bola casto pod palbou. Novovzniknuta strategicka pevnost na brehu Ontarijskeho jazera sa neskor rozrastla na pristav a mesto York, ktore dnes pozname pod menom Toronto.

Fort York is a historic site of military fortifications and related buildings on the west side of downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The fort was built by the British Army and Canadian militia troops in the late 1700s and early 1800s, to defend the settlement and the new capital of the Upper Canada region from the threat of a military attack, principally from the newly independent United States. The British Army occupied Fort York from 1793 to the 1850s and transferred it to Canada, which used it until 1932. However, the City of Toronto owned the Fort from 1903 onwards. Fort York was used as a military establishment until 1880, and again during the First and Second World Wars.

Kensington Market is a distinctive multicultural neighbourhood in downtown Toronto, Ontario. The Market is one of the city's oldest and most famous neighbourhoods, and in November 2006, it became a National Historic Site. Its approximate borders are College St. on the North, Spadina Ave. on the East, Dundas St. W. to the South, and Bellevue Ave. to the West. Most of the neighbourhood's eclectic shops, cafes, and other attractions are located along Augusta Ave. and neighbouring Nassau St. and Kensington Ave. The market is best travelled on foot or bicycle, as the narrow one-way streets and numerous dead-ends are difficult to navigate by car.

Today the neighbourhood is a noted tourist attraction, and a centre of Toronto's cultural life as artists and writers moved into the area. Land prices in the area have increased sharply, but despite its increased appeal to professionals, Kensington still remains a predominantly working class, immigrant community.

The Toronto Islands are a chain of small islands in the city of Toronto, Canada. They are located in Lake Ontario just offshore from the city centre, and provide shelter for Toronto Harbour. The islands are a popular recreational destination, and are home to a small residential community and to the Toronto City Centre Airport. They are connected to the mainland by several ferry services. The islands comprise the largest urban car-free community in North America, though some service vehicles are permitted. Recreational bicyclists are accommodated on the ferries, and bicycles, quadricycles, and canoes can be rented on the islands as well.

The Gibraltar Point Lighthouse is a lighthouse located on the Toronto Islands. Construction was started in 1803 and it started operating in 1808. It was built to a height of 52 feet and extended to 72feet in 1932. The diameter ranges from ~7 m at the base to ~2.1 m at the top. The base is made from stone quarried in Queenston and the extension from Kingston stone. It once stood on the shore but over time sand has built up in front of it so that it now stands about 100 m inland. It is currently unused and shut. It stands as a testament to Toronto's history as a Great Lakes port.

Toronto City Centre Airport, also known as Toronto Island Airport, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada is a small airport located on the Toronto Islands. It was opened to aviation in 1939, and was initially known as the Port George VI Island Airport after the reigning monarch of the time.

Pevnost Fort George v malebnom Ontarijskom mestecku Niagara On The Lake, kde skoro vsetky domy skupili zbohatlici z USA a vyuzivaju ich ako vikendove chalupy.

Fort George National Historic Site is a historic military structure at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, that was the scene of several battles during the War of 1812. The fort consists of earthworks and palisades, along with internal structures, including an officer's quarters, blockhouses to accommodate other ranks and their families, and a stone powder magazine, which is the only original building on the site. Opposite the fort, across the Niagara River, stands Fort Niagara in New York, which can be seen from Fort George's ramparts.

Stara zeleznicna tocna kusok od hlavnej zeleznicnej Union Station stanici v Toronte. Pohlad z CN Tower z vysky 400 m.

Former John Street roundhouse stands to the south of Union Station. Now owned by the City of Toronto, it's bereft of rails. Nonetheless, it is currently undergoing a rebirth as a heritage structure and - hopefully one day soon - a rail museum.

Nove torontske namestie – Yonge-Dundas Square, vzniklo len pred 7 rokmi zburanim starych obchodov, dnes je centrom konzumu a zabavy Toronta.

Yonge-Dundas Square (commonly called Dundas Square) is a privately owned and administered public square in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located on the southeast corner of Yonge Street and Dundas Street. Although Dundas Square was originally plotted by the Queen's Rangers in the early 19th century, it was opened as a public square to the public only in November 2002, and a "grand opening" concert was held on May 30, 2003.
